BloqUV Blog:

Melanoma Awareness Month - May

As we celebrate the upcoming Melanoma Awareness Month in May, it is important to note the alarming rates of melanoma in the United States. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. However, it is mostly curable if it is recognized and treated early. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 8,420 fatalities in the United States. There are many risk factors for melanoma including sun exposure, number of moles on skin, skin type and family history. UVA and UVB rays are harmful to the skin and cumulative sun exposure is a serious factor for increased risk for melanoma. People who live in locations frequently exposed to sunlight, such as Florida, Hawaii, Brazil, and Australia, are more likely to have melanoma.

BloqUV is committed to raising awareness for melanoma. In celebration of the Melanoma Awareness Month in May, BloqUV is proud to be part of the 3rd Annual SunSmart Sprint 5K Run/Walk for Melanoma Awareness scheduled to take place at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1st, 2010 in Crandon Park located in Key Biscayne. In addition to awarding our sun protective activewear to winners of this race, BloqUV is donating 10% of your online purchase to the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami. Please note “UM Donation” on the second address line during check out. Sun protective clothing should be part of daily defense against the sun’s harmful rays. With this in mind, we have developed a line of activewear that infuses fashion with function. Stop by our website, http://bloquv.com, and pick up an outfit today.

Another Great Reason to Invest in BloqUV

Reducing your risk for skin cancer is probably the most important benefit of investing in clothing with sun protection. Another added benefit is that your skin will stay looking younger even as you age. Many of us have accepted that our skin changes as the years go by, and this to some extent is an unavoidable fact of life, but a lot of our premature aging in fact comes from repeated exposure to the sun’s harmful rays.

A few minutes of unprotected sun exposure a day can add up and over the years those minutes begin appearing on your skin in the form of freckles, age spots, spider veins on the face, rough and leathery skin, fine wrinkles that disappear when stretched, loose skin, a blotchy complexion, and even actinic keratoses (thick wart-like, rough, reddish patches of skin). There may be treatments out there after the fact, but these may only be partially effective and by the time they start working you will have thrown away hundreds of dollars. The best treatment out there, as with many conditions in life, is prevention.

This is why we see BloqUV’s activewear as an investment. Our must have long sleeve shirt for women and long sleeve jet tee for men are perfect for working out as they wick away moisture, but they are also well made and great looking, so you will want to wear daily, making your investment more worth while. Pick yours up today!

Skin Cancer on the Rise

This March’s issue of Archives of Dermatology brought with it some concerning news. While we have long known about the alarming rates of skin cancer in the United States, new studies published show that this already worrisome rate is on the rise. One study by Robert S. Stern, M.D., of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, Boston showed that 13 million white, non-Hispanic Americans had had at least one non-melanoma skin cancer by 2007, an alarming rise from all other years looked at starting from 1956. Another study published this month by Howard W. Rogers, M.D., Ph.D., of Advanced Dermatology, Norwich, Conn., and colleagues showed a 76.9% increase from 1992 to 2006 in skin cancer procedures performed on Medicare recipients. Both studies looked at non-melanoma skin cancers. However, another study this month showed that those  having had one melanoma were nine times as likely as those never having had one to have another melanoma diagnosis.

The study by Howard W. Rogers, M.D, Ph.D, and colleagues concluded with the following point, “To date, educational programs emphasizing sun protection have mainly been disappointing in slowing skin cancer rates. In the face of ongoing increases in skin cancer incidence, continued national research and programs on treatment, education and prevention are critical.” We previously blogged about how Americans are falling behind in being proactive in battling skin cancer, and these studies are a stark reminder that we need to change this.

Sun protection is crucial to decreasing skin cancer occurrences, but individuals need to be aware of this need to protect themselves. This is why we strongly encourage you to share this information with your friends and family. Luckily, we live in an age where sharing information is fast and easy, so don’t wait another minute. We strongly believe that investing in sun protective clothing is a key part on your overall sun protection strategy. In fact, a 2009 study by The Environmental Working Group concluded that “sunscreen can only provide partial protection against harmful effects of the sun. Limiting sun exposure and wearing protective clothing are even more important when it comes to protecting against skin cancer and premature skin aging” after finding that many sun screens can be ineffective.” BloqUV’s activewear line blocks 98% of the sun’s harmful rays and has a guaranteed UPF (equivalent to SPF for sunscreens) of 50. Spring is right around the corner, with many of us already getting a break from the cold. Even for those of us still stuck trying to keep warm, we still know that the wait is almost over. BloqUV’s sun protective activewear line was created by two outdoor loving South Floridians, so you know that we at BloqUV are excited to enjoy the weather change and taking more of our lives outside. We recommend that all of our readers also consider shaking their exercise routines and find ways to enjoy all Mother Nature has to offer.

Why? Outdoor exercise is usually free and the possibilities are endless. No matter where you are, you can usually find outdoor space and avoid paying gym fees. Jogging is always available to you outside, and having to adjust to the elements will burn more calories than hitting the treadmill. Even activities you might have to invest a little bit in such as cycling or kayaking are small investments when you consider the benefits. Outdoor sports such as basketball or flag football are ideal for reconnecting with friends and family, while staying in shape at the same time. Plus we don’t have to remind you about the mood elevating effects the outdoors tend to have on all of us.

However safety is crucial when partaking in outdoor activities. You should always stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Choosing the right type of clothing when working out is truly important, as it ensures you will continue doing the activity – no one likes to be uncomfortable. You want fabrics that wick away moisture, which is something we kept in mind when designing BloqUV’s activewear line. All of our fabrics wick away moisture so you stay cool and comfortable. You also want to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays. All of our fabrics have a guaranteed UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of 50 which is equivalent in ratings to SPF for sunscreens, and block Blocks 98% of sun's UV rays (UVA and UVB). Regular clothing is not appropriate to protect yourself from the sun as the average white cotton top only has UPF 5 far less than the 15 recommended by dermatologist. You also want to keep your belongings safe, which is why we designed functional pockets that truly keep everything in place.

Finally, just have fun and stay safe! Make sure you visit our website, http://bloquv.com, and invest in our life saving and functional active wear.

Stay Protected in the Colder Months

Even here in sunny Florida we’ve been experiencing quite the cold front. On days like these, the last thing on your mind is sun protection. In fact, you’re probably wishing the sun would hit you a little harder so you could warm up. Many of us wrongly assume that we are safe from the sun’s damaging rays in these colder months, where we don’t feel that summer burn on our skins. Although it is true that sun burn causing ultraviolet B (UVB) rays aren’t as fierce during these winter months, ultraviolet A (UVA) rays remain constant year round.

For a long time, we’ve associated getting a sun burn with increasing our risk of skin cancer. This has created a false sense of security leading us to think that as long as we steer clear of those painful summer burns, we are safe. In the recent years the medical community has made the connection between UVA rays and skin cancer. UVA rays, although less intense, still play a significant role in skin cancer formation, as well as other sun related skin conditions.

The bottom line? The clouds won’t protect you from either UVB or UVA rays, and although we are not feeling the sun as strongly due to the decrease of UVB rays, we’re still getting hit just as hard by dangerous UVA rays. We designed BloqUV’s line of active wear with this in mind. Our products block 98% of sun's UV rays (UVA and UVB), so you’ll be safe year round and can get back to enjoying outdoor winter activities such as skiing. We have great long sleeved tops perfect for the colder weather that even include hand protection. This way you’ll stay a little warmer and fully protected from UV rays.

It is important to us that you stay safe year round, so we’re offering our online fans a special 10% discount when they spend $150 or more.

The Problem

A quick search on Google targeting government messages about sun safety yields many interesting and informative reports. The problem? None of the top hits on Google are reports from the United States. The truth is that although the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Facts & Figures 2009 shows that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, there has not been a large educational efforts led by the government.

This contrasts starkly to efforts by the Australian government. Realizing that skin cancer was a growing epidemic, a national educational campaign was launched urging Australians to “Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, and Slide” (Slip on some protective clothing, slop on the sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, and slide on some shades). Besides offering excellent advice, the Australian government also established standards for sun protective clothing, and encouraged its manufacturing, after research showed that regular clothing poorly blocked the sun’s harmful ray

Here in the United States we need a similar effort to encourage people to protect themselves. BloqUV created quality sun protective active wear that Blocks 98% of sun's UV rays because we knew it was in desperate need, but the next step is educating consumers about why they need to cover up and protect themselves from the sun. According to the American Cancer Society there are more new cases of skin cancer annually than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. We often see vitamin commercials, and the like, targeting consumers to take precautions against these cancers. Although this is sound advice, and we advocate a complete healthy lifestyle, we’re concerned that skin cancer isn’t featured more prominently. The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Trends Progress Report from 2007 found that 40 and 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have either skin cancer at least once. We do not simply have to accept these statistics, we can be proactive in changing them.

The Solution

The first step is getting the message out there. There are many devoted individuals and companies, ourselves included, working to get the message out there about sun safety and skin cancer. We are constantly striving for the best and safest products, which prompted us to join the American Association of Dermatology (http://aad.org), so we could continue to expand our knowledge base and get our own perspective out into the professional community. We are proud to have made it through the application processes and been accepted to join. However, we cannot do it alone and need your help. What can you do?

1.Share this blog with a colleague, a friends, a family member, or your whole network (you can find handy buttons at the bottom of this post to help you out).

2.Gift an article of sun protective clothing to someone you know who spends a lot of time outdoors. Check out great sun protective active wear for both men and women at http://bloquv.com/

3.Follow us on Twitter (http://twitter.com/BloqUV). We share valuable articles and studies daily, so when you see something you like, retweet it and share it with your friends.

4.We know our product is just one step in protective yourself, so also invest in sunscreen, chapstick with sun protection, and sun protective eye wear.

5.Take a moment of your time and take our poll, so that we can continue to improve: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZN62LCX

6. You tell us! Talk to us in the comment section and give us your suggestions – we’re listening 24/7. Tell us what more can we do to fight skin cancer.

Why BloqUV?

We are living increasingly hectic lives where we are balancing work, family, volunteer commitments, and so much more. For this reason it is of extreme importance that we take care of both our physical and mental health. Living an active lifestyle, and taking it outdoors, creates significant improvement in one’s health overall. Yet in spite of these benefits, we should all be aware of the harmful effects of the sun, and take precautions so that we can keep doing what we love. Research proves UV exposure increases skin cancer, premature aging and other skin damage, and that cancer of the skin is the most common of all cancers in the United States.

We at BloqUV are strong proponents of fit and active lifestyles, and love taking these passions outside where we can fully enjoy everything this world has to offer. It is out of this love and commitment that we created a product that considers the need for staying sun safe while enjoying ourselves. We created a product that not only blocks 98% of sun's UV rays (UVA and UVB) and has a guaranteed UPF of 50, but that looks great and feels great. We know you wouldn’t put on active wear that is uncomfortable or that looks unappealing, and made sure to create a product that meets all of these needs. We also included functional pockets so that you may carry your ipod or Blackberry, so you can stay connected even on the move.

Give us the opportunity to show you the quality of our product at the following events, and we promise you won’t be disappointed.
